After completing her formal legal studies in 1981, she joined the law office of Craig & Craig in Coles County, Illinois, eventually becoming a partner in 1988. During her time as Assistant City Lawyer for the City of Champaign from 1988 to 1996, she gained valuable experience in municipal law.

She has been a member of the Coles County Business and Professional Women and has received recognition for her contributions, including the Young Career Woman Award in 1984.
