Learn about the journey of Robert Louis Wegman, a lawyer in Chesapeake, Virginia, with a unique background in environmental law and military service. Robert Louis Wegman, a lawyer based in Chesapeake, Virginia, has had a diverse and fascinating career path that has shaped his expertise in environmental law. Wegman\s journey began at Atlantic Christian College in 1979, where he pursued his undergraduate education. In 1981, he took a different path by undergoing summer training with the Marines in the Platoon Leaders Class Program at the U.S. Marine Corps base Quantico, Virginia. After completing his training, Wegman graduated from college in 1983. Following his graduation, Wegman spent five years teaching before deciding to make a significant career change. He applied for Coast Guard Officer Candidate School and, after four months of rigorous training, was commissioned as an Ensign. Wegman served proudly in the Coast Guard for nearly 12 years, taking on various quasi-legal and operational roles. It was during this time, particularly in the aftermath of the Exxon Valdez oil spill, that Wegman developed a keen interest in environmental law. Driven by his newfound passion, Wegman applied for and was selected to participate in the highly competitive Legal Education Program. He was one of only four individuals chosen to attend law school through this program. Wegman decided to pursue his legal education at New York Law School, where he excelled and was chosen to be an editor of the prestigious Law Review. Upon graduating cum laude with his Juris Doctorate degree, Wegman was transferred to MLC Atlantic and Atlantic Area commands in Norfolk and Portsmouth, respectively, where he served as a Lieutenant Commander in the Legal Division. During his time in the Coast Guard, Wegman handled a variety of legal cases, including defending sailors and marines in Administrative Discharge Boards, Boards of Inquiry, and Courts-Martial involving serious charges. He also served as a Special Assistant United States Lawyer in the Norfolk Division, where he prosecuted felonies and misdemeanors. In 2000, Wegman made the decision to transition to private practice, leaving the Coast Guard to pursue a career as an environmental lawyer. Wegman joined the prestigious law office Paul Hastings Janofsky & Walker in Manhattan, where he focused on environmental law. He worked on environmental site assessment projects, represented clients in asbestos litigation, and contributed to the rewriting of sections of the New York treatise on environmental law. After gaining valuable experience at the firm, Wegman eventually established his own practice, where he has been successfully managing for 15 years. Through his diverse background in military service and environmental law, Robert Louis Wegman has developed a unique skill set that sets him apart as a lawyer in Chesapeake, Virginia.
