Matthew Borgula is a seasoned trial attorney with a wealth of experience in defending and prosecuting hundreds of criminal and civil cases. Prior to joining SBBL Law, he served as one of the lead federal prosecutors for the U.S. Lawyer’s Office for the Western District of Michigan. In his role as the Deputy Criminal Chief and head of the financial crimes unit and drug unit, Mr. Borgula handled a wide range of federal charges from investigation to Grand Jury indictment through trial. Before his time at the U.S. Lawyer’s Office, Mr. Borgula worked in Chicago at the law office of Jenner & Block. During his time there, he represented clients in various matters including securities fraud, commercial disputes, class actions, and consumer protection act claims. Mr. Borgula specializes in representing individuals and businesses in criminal prosecutions, grand jury investigations, and civil enforcement actions brought by state and federal agencies such as the Internal Revenue Service and Department of Health and Human Services. His primary goal is to minimize the damage and disruption caused by these proceedings, often before charges are even brought. If an indictment or charge cannot be avoided, Mr. Borgula provides expert advice on the risks and benefits of going to trial versus accepting a plea. He is also an experienced and successful trial attorney should a resolution not be reached. Recognized as an expert in criminal violations including tax fraud and evasion, healthcare fraud, federal fraud, money laundering, and the bank secrecy act, Mr. Borgula has been a frequent lecturer at the Department of Justice’s National Advocacy Center in Columbia, South Carolina.
