After completing high school, he enrolled at what was then Central Missouri State University. Uncertain about his future, Larry decided to enlist in the US Air Force in 1993. He served on active duty for three and a half years before returning to college to pursue a degree in political science and public relations. Following his honorable discharge from the USAF, Larry continued his service in the Air and Army Reserve until 1999. In 1998, he obtained degrees in Public Relations and Political Science from UCM. After his undergraduate studies, Larry interned for the House Majority Floor Leader and joined the Beenders Marketing Group. However, he soon realized his passion for law and decided to pursue a law degree. In 2000, Larry began his legal education at the University of Missouri at Kansas City and successfully passed the Missouri Bar exam in 2003. During law school, Larry clerked at Berkowitz and Cook, where he was introduced to Family Law. Upon graduating from UMKC, he established his own law office as a solo attorney, specializing in family, personal injury, and criminal law. In 2014, Larry shifted his focus to assisting individuals harmed by negligence and those facing criminal charges. Before transitioning away from family law, Larry presented at various legal education programs and served as an adjunct professor at UMKC, teaching a family law class alongside Associate Dean Barbara Glesner Fines.
