Alice C. Stubbs is a highly respected partner at the law firm of Tharrington Smith in Raleigh, North Carolina. With a wealth of experience in the legal field, she brings a unique perspective to her practice, having previously served as a Wake County District Court judge for eight years.
Originally appointed by Governor Jim Hunt in 1997, Ms. Stubbs was later elected to the judgeship in 1998 and 2002, where she primarily presided over domestic court cases. Her dedication to the legal profession led her to become certified as a juvenile judge in 2001 and later designated as a family court judge from 2002 until she joined Tharrington Smith.
A native of New Bern, Ms. Stubbs has an impressive educational background, having graduated from Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts in 1985, followed by earning a degree in economics from Davidson College in 1989. She furthered her education by attending University College in London and obtaining her law degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1992.
After completing her education, Ms. Stubbs clerked for Chief Judge James B. Wolfe, Jr., of the United States Bankruptcy Court in the Middle District of North Carolina, before entering into a successful litigation practice with Stubbs and Perdue, P.A.
Ms. Stubbs has received numerous accolades throughout her career, including an AV Preeminent Peer Rating through Martindale-Hubbell, recognition in Business North Carolina Magazine’s Legal Elite in Family Law, listings in Best Lawyers in America and North Carolina Super Lawyers. In 2017, she was honored to be included in Super Lawyers' prestigious Top 50 Women list.
Outside of her legal career, Ms. Stubbs is married to Nigle (“Tex”) Barrow, an attorney practicing state and federal litigation in North Carolina, and is a proud mother of two sons, Buzzy and Davis. Her interests include water and snow skiing, reading, traveling, and tennis, with a particular passion for playing on USTA league teams, including a 5.0 women’s team. In 2016, she was part of the winning Carolina Cup team in North Carolina.
